Under the new STCW Convention and Code, updated proficiency training will be required every 5 years.
Our update courses are delivered to those who currently hold an Advanced Fire Fighting Certificate, and all Seafarers and Security Personnel who hold an Advanced Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting and Personal Survival Techniques certificate.

Our courses last up to 1 day and are delivered with a mixture of practical and theory based exercises. Courses give delegates the chance to restore and update their current knowledge and skills.

ADVANCED FIRE FIGHTING

This course is classroom based involving practical group tasks. Delegates will refresh their knowledge and focus on controlling fire fighting operations on board ship, organizing & training fire parties, fixed systems and fire investigations. This is provided with essential education and training to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency set out in the STCW table A-VI/3

fire prevention FIRE PREVENTION & FIRE FIGHTING

This is a practical course using our purpose built facility. It involves the correct use of breathing apparatus for search & rescue operations, utilizing hoses, nozzles and extinguishers. Delegates will be able to maintain the required standard of competence in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting.

PERSONAL SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES

In addition to new guidelines for the STCW 2010 code, it is a requirement for the Fishing Industry and Boat Masters License to undertake this updated training which complies with section A-V/1 of the STCW code.
The intention of this training is to enable delegates to maximize their chances of survival in the event of abandoning a ship. This course is a practical session where delegates will cover the correct donning of a lifejacket & use of an immersion suite, jump from height into the water, swim while wearing a life jacket, right an inverted liferaft, keep afloat without a life jacket and board a survival craft from the water when wearing a life jacket.

UPDATE TRAINING PROFICIENCY IN SURVIVAL CRAFT & RESCUE BOATS
(Other than Fast Rescue Boats)

Who is required to complete this course?
Section A-VI/2 of STCW (paragraph 5) states that ‘Seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 4 in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats shall be required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence, to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A VI/2-1.’

Learning Outcome
The learner is able to maintain the required standard of competence in survival craft and rescue boats (other than fast rescue boats)

Learning Objectives
This is a one-day course comprising theory and practical sessions, both in the classroom and at our waterside facility where candidates are required to undertake practical drills in handling inflatable rescue boats, life boats and life rafts to achieve the following learning objectives -

1. Identify the dangers associated with the use of off-load and on-load release devices.
2. Demonstrate the correct operation of off-load and on-load release devices, including the correct resetting of both types of release device.
3. Identify and explain the correct operation of Fall Prevention/Secondary Safety Devices or their equivalent.
4. Safely operate a survival craft engine.
5. Safely take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch.
6. Safely manage survivors and survival craft after abandoning ship.
7. Rig and use locating devices including communication and signalling apparatus and pyrotechnics.
8. Apply first aid to survivors.
9. Describe the management of injured persons.


Pre-Requisites:
Updating training is to be undertaken, in line with the above regulations, by seafarers holding a proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats (other than fast rescue boats) certificate, or equivalent*, and who have maintained the required standard of competence, by onboard training and experience, for all competencies listed in the self-declaration form.

*Equivalent certification includes ‘Proficiency in Survival Craft’ and the ‘MNTB Life Boat Certificate’. Please refer to MCA notice MSN1865 for further guidance.
